Baseball team tops Indian River State College in series opener

In a back and forth series opener, the Eastern Florida State College held on to defeat Indian River State College in a Citrus Conference game on the road.

The Titans defeated The River 13-12 as Eastern Florida State College snapped a four-game losing streak and won the series opener.

Breylynn Courtney got out of jams in both the eighth and ninth innings to pick up the win for the Titans.

Indian River State College jumped out to a 5-0 lead but the Titans struck for four runs in the top of the third inning as Andrew Prieto, Omir Santos and Shane Thomas each had RBI singles as The River's lead was 5-4.

Indian River State College scored twice in the bottom of the third inning to take a 7-4 lead. The Titans took the lead in the fourth inning, scoring six times. Thomas had a two-run single and then Jackson Wargo hit a two-run double to take a 9-7 lead. Ray Yero made it 10-7 on an RBI single.

The River would tie the game 10-10 on a three-run home run.

Yero doubled to score Thomas in the sixth to give the Titans a 11-10 lead. Iziah Santiago would make it 12-10 with an RBI single.

Once again Indian River State College tied the game 12-12 in the bottom of the sixth.

It would remain tied until Richardson's single scored Wargo to give the Titans a 13-12 lead in the top of the eighth inning.

Bryce Jackson made a diving catch to keep Indian River scoreless in the eighth and then Yero turns a double play in the ninth inning to end the game.

Prieto had five hits in the game while Santiago and Thomas each had three hits in the win as the Titans had 22 hits in the win.

Eastern Florida State College will return to Bruce Bochy Field for a conference doubleheader on Saturday against Indian River State College. The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. and admission is free. Fans can also watch the games live online at the EFSC Titans YouTube page.
