Eastern Florida State College women's tennis player Elena Prado Martinez was named the 2025 recipient of the Vicki Schnurr Award, presented to the FCSAA's top women's tennis scholar-athlete.
The sophomore from Sevilla, Spain reached the semifinals of the NJCAA Division I National Tournament at No. 2 singles.
Martinez finished the year with a 3.60 grade point average and played No. 1 or No. 2 singles all season for the Titans.
"For me it is important to study as well as practice in tennis because you have to be good in class first, tennis is secondary for me. It is so important for me to be good at both," said Martinez who will be studying and playing at Norfolk State University in Virginia next season. "The professors are so helpful there that it makes it easier to focus on both studies and tennis."
It is the second straight season that Martinez has been named to the FCSAA All-Academic team, finishing her freshman season with a 3.88 grade point average.
"We are very excited for Elena receiving the Vicki Schnurr Award!" said Jeff Carr, Associate Vice President of Athletics. "Elena excelled on the court and in the classroom at Eastern Florida; she is very deserving of this prestigious award and she is a true student athlete in every way. We are all very proud of her and she represents Eastern Florida with distinction."
Martinez is a candidate for the FCSAA's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. The finalists will be announced Tuesday, July 1 with the winner announced on Thursday, July 3.
