Varon finishes second in ITA Oracle Cup national championships
Eastern Florida State College women's tennis player Luisa Varon finishes as the runner-up in the ITA Oracle Cup national tennis championships
Luisa Varon's historic week came to an end in the finals of the ITA Oracle Cup national championship tournament Saturday in Surprise, Arizona.
The Eastern Florida State College sophomore came into the final on a hot streak, winning 20 of her 22 sets coming into the final but on Saturday it was the State College of Florida's Maria Medina who had the hot hand, taking the title 6-3, 6-1.
The second-place finish is a first for the Titans and is the second straight season that Varon has placed in the national tournament. And she did it in impressive fashion, winning both the quarterfinals and semifinals matches in straight sets.
"Very happy to have our college represented in the singles final. After playing in front of the top players and coaches at every level, the word is now out about Eastern Florida State College," Eastern Florida State College tennis coach Jerry Thor said before the finals.
Varon also teamed with Josephine Karcher to finish fourth in the doubles tournament.
