Luisa Varon will play a familiar foe for national title on Saturday
Eastern Florida State College women's tennis player Luisa Varon will play for a national title on Saturday morning after winning her semifinal match in Surprise, Arizona
The battle for the ITA Oracle Cup JUCO title will be a rematch of the ITA Florida Regional Championships.
Eastern Florida State College's Luisa Varon and State College of Florida's Maria Medina both won semifinal matches Friday afternoon to set up the rematch Saturday in Surprise, Arizona.
In the first meeting, the players split the first two sets and Varon rallied late to win the tiebreaker and advance to the ITA Oracle Cup as the top seed.
"It has all the makings of an epic final," Eastern Florida State College tennis coach Jerry Thor said. "She will need to handle the moment and execute and I'm sure we will come away with a positive result."
Medina also qualified as the runner-up and was the No. 2 seed, but had a tough semifinal that went 7-6(4) in the third set tiebreaker.
"She is a really good player, but after the first match against her I kind of know her strengths and weaknesses, so I will try and use that," Varon said. "I know it is going to be a tough match but I am really looking forward to playing her again."
Varon defeated No. 4 seed Sarah Frendo of Cowley College 6-4, 6-1 in the national semifinals to earn a berth into the final and a chance to bring home the first national title in program history.
"It's a great honor for me to reach the final of the national championships," Varon said. "I am going out there tomorrow and I will enjoy every point, fight and try to do my best. I really want to take that victory back to Melbourne."
Varon has yet to lose a singles match this fall season and has won 20 of the 22 sets she has played in. She will play in the finals at 11:30 a.m. with the winner advancing to the Super Bowl Saturday afternoon against champions of Division II, Division III and the NAIA.
The winner of the Super Bowl will play in the Division I USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
Varon teamed with Josephine Karcher to place fourth in the doubles tournament, falling in the third-place match 7-5, 7-5 on Friday night. Down 3-0 in the second set, they rallied back to take a 5-4 lead but the team from Tyler Junior College came storming back to win it 7-5.
"It's interesting to think that not playing our best tennis is still good enough to come away with a fourth-place finish," Thor said. "We just have to continue to work to be able to perform at an even higher level in doubles this spring."
