Women's soccer team begins Southeast District Championships Friday at home
The Eastern Florida State College women’s soccer team will face USC Lancaster in the first semifinal at the Southeast District Championship at Orlando Health Stadium on the Melbourne campus
The Eastern Florida State College women's soccer team will face USC Lancaster in the first semifinal at the Southeast District Championship at Orlando Health Stadium on the Melbourne campus.
The Titans come into the tournament as the No. 3 seed and are ranked 19th in the final NJCAA Division I National Poll. Eastern Florida State College comes into the tournament looking to rebound from a loss in the Region 8 Final on Sunday evening. Freshman Lili Baidoe has scored 12 goals in 14 games this season while teammate Tiggi Gent has scored eight times.
USC Lancaster won the Region 10 title, defeating USC Sumter 7-0 in the final. The Lancers have posted shutouts in five straight games and 11 on the season. Chloe Jewell has scored 23 goals this season for the Lancers which is tied for third in the nation and has scored at least once in the past four games with a four-goal game against Southwest Virginia on Oct. 18. She has also recorded two hat tricks this season.
Last season the two teams met in the semifinals and the Titans picked up the win, advancing to the championship game, which they also won, defeating Gordon State. They made a run at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament, reaching the Championship Game before falling in overtime.
In the other semifinal, Daytona State College is making their debut in the District Tournament and will play Southern Union State Community College at 7:30 p.m. The Falcons come into the tournament 13-3 overall and have won nine games in a row. Valeria Vasquez has scored 18 goals in 16 games this season with five game winners. Daytona State College has scored 71 goals as teammate Shaneil Buckley has scored 14 goals.
Southern Union advanced by defeating Georgia Military 1-0 and come into the district tournament 9-6-2 on the season. The Bison have scored 43 goals this season led by Ansley Warner who has scored eight times.
