Women's soccer team posts shutout in season opener
The Eastern Florida State College women's soccer team defeated Southwestern Illinois State College 2-0 Thursday night at Titan Soccer Complex
The Eastern Florida State College women's soccer team opened the 2019 regular season with a shutout against Southwestern Illinois Thursday night at Titan Soccer Complex.
The No. 4-ranked Titans wasted no time getting on the board as freshman Paula Garrido broke free on a pass from Morgan Miller and beat the keeper to make it 1-0 13 minutes into the match.
With three minutes and 33 seconds left in the first half Josephine Monteiro took a cross from Emily Bodi and put it in the back of the net to give the Titans a 2-0 lead in the first half.
It was the first career goal for both players as Garrido was playing in her first game and Monteiro is coming back from a knee injury.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kiera Gibson made sure the score will hold up, making two nice saves in the second half to preserve the first shutout of the 2019 season.
"Kiera had to save us a couple of times, two unbelievable saves to he us win the game," Carr said. "We were kind of sloppy out there and didn't move for each other, we didn't play up to our expectations tonight but got the win."
Eastern Florida State College will play Florida Tech in an exhibition game on Sunday before hitting the road next weekend for a couple of big games in Kansas. The Titans will play No. 8 Butler Community College on Aug. 31 and then No. 5 Navarro College on Sept. 2.
It marks the fifth straight time the Titans have beaten the Blue Storm and the women's soccer team is now won 10 straight at Titan Soccer Complex.
