Titan women's soccer team falls in overtime

The Eastern Florida State College women's soccer team has battled adversity all season and came out on top.

But on Wednesday night, they could not find a way to get past Laramie County Community College, falling 3-2 in the first overtime in a Pool C contest.

Playing without second-leading scorer Nathali Da Silva and Darien Davis slowed by an ankle injury, the Titans traded goals with Laramie County and sent the game to overtime with just two substitutes.

But with 20 seconds remaining in the first overtime, Laramie County's Shauni Griffiths hit a shot that Taylor Major got her hands on but could not hang onto and it bounced into the back of the net.

"It wasn't meant to be, we made a little mistake in the back and gave them the ball and they buried it," Eastern Florida State College women's soccer coach Jeff Carr said. "It's tough to lose, it is our only loss of the year on our field and of course it is the worst time of year to lose. They are a great team, have some special players and we have some special players but we weren't good enough tonight. The effort was there, I am so proud of this group."

For the second straight game, Bunny Shaw scored twice in the contest. Her first goal came just nine minutes into the contest as Katie Lockwood hit a perfect corner kick that Shaw headed into the back of the net to tie things up. Shaw's second goal came in the 62^nd minute to tie the game again and ultimately send it to overtime.

"I have to commend (Titans coach) Jeff (Carr), the season that those girls have gone through and what they have lost and the injuries they have, it amazes me how well they played and how good of a team they are," Laramie County Community College head coach Jim Gardner said. "I couldn't imagine what they would have been like if they had all of his players. It is a class program."

The team finishes the season 14-3 and coach Carr was proud of what they had achieved.

"I am so proud of these girls, they just never quit. It says a lot about their character. All of the adversity this year and injuries and deaths of family members and friends, nothing but proud and am glad I am their coach," "They have a never-die kind of attitude. What they have gone through and the stuff they do off the field and on the field – the love is just so evident so it is sad to see Bunny and Jay (Bales) and Darien (Davis) and Paula's (Astiazaran) careers at Eastern Florida are done."
