Late goal propels Titan women to victory
The Eastern Florida State College women's soccer team picked up a big 2-1 win over No. 13 Johnson County Community College Friday night
Locked in a 1-1 tie and time winding down, the Eastern Florida State College women's soccer team came up with the big goal to claim the 2-1 victory over No. 13 Johnson County Community College Friday night at Titan Soccer Complex.
With three minutes remaining in regulation and the score tied 1-1, Guro Eriksen, who was playing the outside marking back, made a run up the field with Darien Davis, got the ball and spun around a defender, taking off toward the goal. Her shot skipped past the keeper and into the net, giving the No. 1 Titans a big win at home.
"It was a good feeling. I just remember thinking we have to get down there and score," Eriksen said of her first goal as a Titan. "We just had to find a way. It went well. I had a lot of chances tonight and I needed to finish one."
It was a big one as it kept the Titans unbeaten and with both wins against nationally-ranked teams.
And the Titans took the early lead as Nathali Da Silva found the back of the net 15 minutes into the contest for her second goal of the young season.
But Johnson County would strike back eight minutes later to tie the game at 1-1.
"We missed some chances out there, the first half we should have been up a couple. A couple players missed point blank chances and we missed a PK," Eastern Florida State College women's soccer coach Jeff Carr said. "But we got the job done and I am really proud of them, most of them had to play the whole 90 minutes. You have to applaud the effort tonight, it was fantastic."
The Titans will be back at Titan Soccer Complex on Sunday morning when they face Southwestern Illinois, who lost to Broward Friday 6-1. Game time is 10 a.m. and admission is free.
