The Eastern Florida State College lost a heartbreaker on Sophomore Day at Titan Field House Saturday.
The Titans honored the five sophomores before the game and then came out strong, leading almost the entire game but Florida Southwestern State College took the lead on a free throw with 6.3 seconds left and picked up the Citrus Conference win, 64-62.
Eastern Florida State College jumped out to a 19-6 lead on a Grace Strickland three-point play as she hit the shot and was fouled. She would hit the free throw and the Titans went on to lead 22-8 after the first quarter.
The second quarter saw the Titans continue to play well and the lead reached 20 points on an Ofir Parpara basket.
Florida Southwestern would cut the lead to 15 at halftime as the Titans took a 38-23 lead into the break.
Eastern Florida State College would keep the lead throughout the third quarter as they headed to the fourth quarter leading 53-39.
But the fourth quarter saw Florida Southwestern rally back and a couple of big shots by Chelseas Bishop baskets tied the game 60-60. A foul and then a technical foul gave the Bucs four free throws with 6.3 seconds left and they made two. The Titans last-second shot missed and the Bucs picked up the win and locked up a place in the FCSAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament. Bishop finished with a game-high 29 points.
Bruna DaSilva finished with a season-best 26 points while Ofir Parpara had 10 points.
Eastern Florida State College is now 5-9 in the conference and has a big week of games as they look to get into the state tournament. The Titans will travel to St. Petersburg College for a 5 p.m. game on Wednesday.
