Eastern Florida State College women's basketball player Stephanie Torres was named Region VIII Player of the Week
Eastern Florida State College women's basketball player Stephanie Torres was named the Region VIII Player of the Week on Tuesday.
The sophomore point guard averaged 19 points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists in two games last week, helping the Titans to a 2-0 week.
"Honestly, I was really surprised. It is a really good feeling to be recognized as the state player of the week," Torres said. "My goal is to be one of the best players in our conference, but this is special."
After finishing her freshman season short of her goals, Torres committed to improving her game for her sophomore season.
"I trained every day back home, I actually had two trainers I was working with so if one trainer was busy, I would go see the other one. I just really wanted to get better and be a better player," Torres said. "I just worked on my shot, I shoot a lot and try to put up the shots that I will take during games so I can get better every day."
Torres is averaging 17 points per game this season and already has four 20-plus point performances in eight games this season.
"I am a lot more confident in my shooting ability this year and I have worked on my mindset a lot. But it is more than that, I think I am taking better shots because I have better court vision, so I look to pass if I don't have a good shot where last year I was looking to score all the time," Torres said.
