Softball team tops Indian River State College to advance in tournament
The Eastern Florida State College softball team jumped out to an early lead and defeated No. 4 seed Indian River State College to advance at the FCSAA D1 Softball Championships
The Eastern Florida State College softball team jumped out to an early lead and defeated No. 4 seed Indian River State College to advance at the FCSAA D1 Softball Championships in Clearwater.
The No. 5 seeded Titans came out swinging in the top of the first inning as Aracelis Jimenez reached on an error, bringing up All-FCSAA Player Annalyn Duncan. And she would deliver, hitting a two-run home run to give the Titans a lead. It was Duncan's 13th home run of the season.
After starting pitcher Avery Velazquez struck out two of the three hitters she faced in the bottom of the first inning, Kerissa Howell dug in to start the second inning and drove a 1-1 pitch over the wall for her sixth home run. It would give the Titans a 3-0 lead.
It was all Velazquez would need as she worked out of a jam in the bottom of the second inning, getting the strikeout with two on.
Velazquez would give up just one run and strike out eight in the win.
Brooklyn Scott had two hits for the Titans who will advance to the semifinals on Thursday night.
The win marked the first time since 2022 that the Titans had beaten Indian River State College, snapping an 0-15 streak.
The Titans will play No. 1 seed Florida Southwestern State College in the second semifinal of the night, beginning at 7 p.m.
No. 2 seed Northwest Florida State College will play No. 3 seed Santa Fe in the first semifinal.
