Softball team opens conference season with a sweep
The Eastern Florida State College softball team picked up a pair of Citrus Conference wins on the road Tuesday
The 12th-ranked Eastern Florida State College softball team picked up a pair of Citrus Conference wins on the road Tuesday.
The Titans defeated No. 11 Seminole State College 7-6 in the first game and then cruised to one of their biggest wins in program history, posting a 20-0 victory in five innings.
Down 1-0 in the first game, the Titans took the lead with a two-run home run by Madison Velazquez. It was the second home run of the season for Madison Velazquez and gave the Titans a 2-1 lead. Seminole State would score twice in the bottom of the second and lead 3-2.
But the Titans would score four times in the third inning as Emma George and Aracelis Jimenez score on an error. And then Annalyn Duncan hit a two-run home run as the Titans took a 6-3 lead. It was Duncan's three home run of the season.
Leading 6-4 Duncan hit an RBI single in the fifth inning to make it 7-4.
Seminole State College would rally for two runs in the seventh inning but Jaelynne Whipple made a nice catch on a line drive with two on and two out to end the game.
Duncan had three hits while Jimenez finished with two hits.
In Game 2, the Titans scored six times in the top of the first inning as Jessica Merk hit a two-run home run while Whipple had an RBI double in the first.
The Titans would add a run in the second inning and then had seven runs in the third and five more in the fourth, adding one more in the fifth.
Avery Velazquez had a home run in the third inning and finished 3-for-5. It was the fourth home run of the season for Avery Velazquez.
Kerissa Howell went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and drove in two while Duncan was 2-for-4 and Whipple was 3-for-3 and scored three times. Merk drove in four runs on two hits as the Titans finished with 20 hits.
Avery Velazquez struck out six in five shutout innings for the win.
Eastern Florida State College will be back at Titan Softball Complex for a conference doubleheader against Hillsborough Community College on Saturday. The first game will begin at 3 p.m.
