Softball team picks up pair of wins on opening day
The Eastern Florida State College softball team picked up a pair of thrilling victories in the season opener against the State College of Florida-Manatee on Thursday

The Eastern Florida State College softball team started the season with a thrilling sweep of a doubleheader against the State College of Florida-Manatee on Thursday.
After winning the first game 13-9 the Titans battled SCF-Manatee in a close battle in the second game that would end in with a walk-off three-run home run by Annelyn Duncan.
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning of Game 2, Jessica Merk hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to give the Titans a 2-1 lead. The Titans would add a run as Kerissa Howell singled and scored on an Aracelis Jimenez single. Up 3-1, SCF-Manatee would scored a run in each the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game 3-3.
Eastern Florida State College scored in the sixth inning as Madison Velazquez singled and Brooklyn Scott came in as a pinch runner. Scott stole second base and scored on Jaelynne Whipple's single, giving the Titans a 4-3 lead.
SCF-Manatee would score twice in the top of the seventh inning as A'lana Martinez and Cailin Kelly both scored.
But down 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Jimenez reached on a bunt single, stole second and scored on Madison Velazquez single to tie the game.
With two on and two out, Duncan stepped up and hit a 2-0 pitch over the wall to give the Titans the sweep.
Isabella Rosales would come into the game in the seventh inning and end the rally to pick up the win.
In the first game the Titans found themselves down 6-2 in the third inning but Eastern Florida State College would send 12 hitters to the plate and would score eight times, the big hits coming from Whipple, who had a two-run double and a Jimenez two-run single.
A two-run double by Duncan helped the Titans take a 13-6 lead. SCF-Manatee would score three times in the sixth inning.
Isabella Rosales picked up the win in relief, coming in to get the final out in the third inning and finishing the game.
Eastern Florida State College will be back at home on Friday with a doubleheader against Florida Gateway beginning at 1 p.m. at Titan Softball Complex.
