Softball team earns sweep on the road

The Eastern Florida State College softball team swept Florida Gateway College in a doubleheader Thursday on the road.

The Titans picked up wins of 7-3 and 13-9 to improve to 9-1 and have now won eight in a row heading into Saturday's doubleheader at home.

In Game 1, Avery Velazquez had another strong outing on the mound, pitching another complete game with Florida Gateway scoring three times in the seventh of a 7-0 game.

After four scoreless innings the Titans broke through in the fifth inning with an inside the park home run by Isabel Otero. It was Otero's first home run of the season and made it 1-0. Avery Velazquez then stepped to the plate and hit her second home run of the season to make it 2-0. They would score two more as Ashley Corazzini and Ashley Grieser both had RBIs.

Up 4-0, the Titans would add three more runs in the sixth inning as Kayla Fanning scored on an Aracelis Jimenez hit and then Jimenez scored on Velazquez hit. Velazquez would score on Corazzini's double and it was 7-0.

In Game 2, the Titans found themselves fight an uphill battle for the first four innings but once again the fifth inning was when the Titans struck.

With the bases loaded, Cora Middleton came up and hit a two-run single and then with two on, Isabel Otero struck again with an inside the park home run. The big hit by Otero would tie the game 9-9.

In the sixth inning, Ashley Grieser stroked an RBI single to give the Titans a lead. They would add three more in the top of the seventh on RBI hits by Corazzini, George and Martha Jones.

The Titans will be back at Titan Softball Complex Saturday for a doubleheader against South Florida State College beginning at 1 p.m. Admission is free and you can watch the games live online at the EFSC Titans YouTube page.
