The Eastern Florida State College men's golf team got off to a slow start in the first round of the NJCAA Division I National Tournament Wednesday in Newton, Kansas.
The Titans shot a 309 in the first round and is 11th overall at Sand Creek Station.
Sophomore Horace Pennix shot a 1-over 73 and is tied for ninth overall after the first round. Pennix bogeyed the first hole but came right back with a birdie on the par 5 second hole and made the turn at 1-over. A double bogey on hole No. 10 but rebounded with birdies on No. 16 and 18 to finish even par on the back nine.
Sean Jacoby and Jamie Smith both shot 6-over in the first round while teammate Daniel Byers shot 8-over. Nolan Hyatt shot a 90.
Indian Hills Community College shot a 5-over 293 and leads the tournament with Odessa College in second.
The Titans will tee off in the second round of the tournament beginning at 11:50 a.m.
