The Eastern Florida State College men's golf team will tee off Monday in the NJCAA Division I Southeast District Championship in Montgomery, Alabama.
The Titans come into the district tournament ranked eighth in the national poll and looking to qualify for the NJCAA Division I National Tournament for the 24th straight season.
Jamie Smith, Daniel Byers, Sean Jacoby, Horace Pennix and Nolan Hyatt will tee off for the Titans at Lagoon Park. Smith comes into the tournament ranked fifth in the nation individually and has two individual wins this season.
"I like the group, feel like I have the right mix but we have to get off to a better start on Monday. We have gotten off to slow starts and while it is encouraging to see them come back, we have to start better," Eastern Florida State College men's golf coach Jamie Howell said.
Eastern Florida State College will be one of nine teams competing in the tournament including Central Alabama Community College who is ranked fourth and have won all five tournaments this fall including the Titan Winter Invitational in January.
"Central Alabama are strong as can be, they are obviously the favorite coming in. We have finished second to them every time we have played in the same event this season and hopefully we can change that, but we can't focus on Central Alabama. We have to focus on the course," Howell said. "This course is quirky and is a shot makers course. You can't power through this course, it is narrow and goes through some trees. Accuracy is needed."
Palm Beach State College will also be in the field and is ranked 10th in the national poll. Wallace State Community College, Coastal Alabama Community College, USC-Union, USC Sumter, Southern Union State and Andrew College will also be competing in the tournament.
Teams will play 36 holes on Monday with the final round of 18 holes scheduled for Tuesday morning. The top three teams will automatically advance to the NJCAA Division I National Tournament which will be held at Sand Creek Station in Newton, Kansas.
