The Eastern Florida State College men's golf team finished strong to sit in sixth place after the first round of the NJCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship in Garden City, Kansas.
The Titans shot 3-under as a team in the final three holes and finished at 294, tied for sixth place with Midland College. The team shot even par on the back nine in round 1.
Sophomore Tyler Bennett had birdies in three of the final four holes including sinking a long putt on the 18th hole, finishing with a 2-over 74.
Brad Bawden led the Titans, shooting a 2-under 70 and is tied for second heading into the second round. Ryan Rozic shot 1-under on the back nine and finished tied for 42nd at 3-over, tied with teammate Mathieu Echelard. Fraser Davren shot a 5-over in the first round.
"Reasonable score for the team today. Without the western Kansas winds the course was somewhat exposed but still presented a challenge," Eastern Florida State College men's golf coach Jamie Howell said. "Good day by Brad as he was as steady as ever and a good finish by Tyler and Ryan. There is a lot of golf to be played over the next three days and the weather is to change quite a bit too."
Forecast shows the temperature will drop each day with clouds and rain moving in later in the week.
Odessa College leads the field after a 4-under 284.
Eastern Florida State College will tee off for the second round beginning at 11:20 a.m.
