Baseball team opens first game of series with win over Indian River State College
The Eastern Florida State College baseball team defeated Indian River State College 4-2 in the first game of the series
For the second straight series, the Eastern Florida State College baseball team won the opening game of the series.
The Titans defeated Indian River State College 4-2 Tuesday night at Bruce Bochy Field.
The Titans came out swinging as Garrett Evans led off with a single and scored on Lake Fisher's RBI double. Fisher would later score on Nathan Housen's single to make it 2-0.
Starting pitcher Melvin Cotto threw 4 1/3 innings of shutout baseball, leaving with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth. KC Swords came in and struck out the first batter he faced and then got the ground out to end the threat.
Meanwhile Indian River starter Chase Romaine settled down and retired 12 straight hitters until Evans walked in the fifth.
The Pioneers tied the game in the top of the eighth and threatened to take the lead, but Lake Fisher took over for Swords with two on and two out and recorded the strikeout to keep it tied.
Garrett Evans led off the bottom of the eighth with a walk, bringing up Kaeber Rog. Rog hit an outside fastball to the wall in left field, scoring Evans and Rog ended up on third with his first triple of the season.
Rog would score on a passed ball to give the Titans a 4-2 lead.
Fisher stayed in the game and got the final three outs including a strikeout to finish the game and pick up his first win of the season.
Rog and Housen each had two hits in the win.
The two teams will play Game 2 of the series Wednesday afternoon at Indian River State College beginning at 2 p.m.
