Duran shines in Titans win over Indian River State College
The Eastern Florida State College baseball team defeated Indian River State College 12-2 Tuesday night in a Southern Conference game
Sammy Duran showed why he won a Gold Glove last season, making an incredible diving catch to end the sixth inning at Bruce Bochy Field in a 12-2 win over Indian River State College Tuesday night in a Southern Conference game.
"I thought it was going to be a double but I took a good route to it and thought, OK I may get to this and went out, fully extended and said 'I got it!' I landed and closed it," Duran said after the game.
Duran's catch ended the top of the sixth inning and came up to lead off the bottom of the sixth. He hit an inside fastball over the left field wall to give the Titans an 8-1 lead. The Titans would score two more runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to end the game.
"The umpire actually said nice catch, I said, 'Yes I know' and tried to catch my breathe. I got my pitch and just turned on it," Duran said.
The Titans jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning with three straight RBI hits. Then in the third inning, Elian Merejo, Ian Lisle and Norberto Navarro hit back-to-back-to-back doubles and it was 7-0.
That was more than enough for starting pitcher Chandellor Benton who pitched seven strong innings, allowing two runs and struck out four for his fourth win of the season.
Navarro had three hits and drove in two and Lisle finished with two doubles and two RBI.
The Titans, who improved to 15-6 overall and 3-2 in the conference, will host Broward College at 6 p.m. Friday and at 1 p.m. Saturday.
