The Eastern Florida State College women's volleyball team may be hitting its stride at just the right time.
After an 8-2 start, the Titans struggled in the middle of the season but a big win down the stretch punched their ticket to the postseason for the first time under head coach Andrea Twelvetrees.
"I think it took a lot to get over that hump but we are getting back into the groove and are remembering what it was like to play like we were early in the season and I think that is good going into the postseason," said sophomore Kylie Hurst who is No. 24th in the state with 173 digs. "It's super cool to be able to be a part of this team. I am really proud of all that we have accomplished and how hard we have worked to get here."
The Titans will have a tough road to the state tournament as the Mid-Florida Conference has three of the top five teams in Region 8 and two in the NJCAA Division I poll, including No. 14 Daytona State College who the Titans will play Tuesday night on the road.
"We have had some injuries but overall we are trying to fill those gaps and getting better, I think we are adapting well," said sophomore Delaney Smith who is 12th in the state in digs with 300. "We continue to get better. At first we were really playing well but then we hit that slump and I think we are getting back to that point now."
And both Hurst and Smith agree that It comes down to communication for the Titans.
"That is one thing I have learned this season, communication and coming together as a team plays a huge role, when we don't do that, you can tell and we struggle. When we do work on those little things, it really impacts how we play," Hurst said.
Daytona State College won the first two meetings, but the Titans are beginning to look like the team at the beginning of the season that posted the best start under Twelvetrees and cracked the top 25 poll.
"We have overcome some adversity through injuries and team dynamics and are finally starting to play more consistently," Twelvetrees said. "Daytona are a very strong team, but if we can sort out our blocking and defense I am confident we can make a run. My philosophy as a coach is that we should be playing our best volleyball at the end of the season and the time is right to prove how far we have come."
